City’s Outdoor Dining Permit Program for Restaurants to Start Monday, October 10

HONOLULU -- Starting Monday, Oʻahu restaurants can apply for a City and County of Honolulu permit for outdoor dining through the Department of Transportation Services (DTS). This two-year pilot program from the City will provide an economic boost to eligible restaurants and give diners a fun option for eating out.

“I am excited that this new pilot program will support our local restaurants and our economic recovery,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “Mahalo to the Honolulu City Council and the Hawaii Restaurant Association for collaborating with my administration on this initiative. When we work together, we can achieve great things for our community.”

“Restaurants face the challenge of rising costs and welcome new ways to increase revenue and give diners a wonderful experience. We thank Mayor Blangiardi and his team for understanding the needs of restaurants and taking swift action to allow permitted outdoor dining on Oʻahu,” said Ave Kwok, incoming chair of the Hawaii Restaurant Association.

Applications will be available on the DTS website on Monday. The agency will implement the outdoor dining services pilot program and issue permits to approved applicants. The application fee will be $50 and approved permits will be valid for six months.

To help restaurants get ready to apply, the City’s Office of Economic Revitalization (OER) will host a webinar on Friday, October 7, at 10 a.m. on its Facebook page: facebook.com/oer.honolulu. No Facebook account is needed to watch and the webinar will be recorded and available on the OER Facebook page for later viewing.
